Pest and disease control is an important part of horticulture. It's equally important for you to understand what these pests and diseases are, what causes them, why they occur and how they spread. We've listed some common tree and shrub pests below, with information about how we can help protect your trees and shrubs from them.

Corrective Pruning

If you want to keep your trees healthy, you'll need to prune them. How you go about doing that can affect the value of the tree and its health for years to come. If you don't prune properly, any problems that arise in the future will be more expensive to remedy. But if you're up for pruning with an eye toward health and future growth, then it's a simple matter of how and when to cut—and who to call when you need help.

A few factors play into what makes pruning "corrective." The first is age: corrective pruning is done on young trees; maintenance pruning is done on older trees.

A second factor is purpose: corrective pruning aims to correct mistakes in construction; maintenance pruning keeps a tree at its ideal shape for the way it grows. A young plant should be properly constructed and should mature into its ideal form, but sometimes that ideal form doesn't match the original plan. Maybe a branch was mispositioned or something was left out during construction, or maybe we just have new ideas about what we want from our plants as they mature.

Fertilization and Infection Disease Control

The insects and diseases that are most likely to affect your trees and shrubs are usually common throughout the country, but each area has its own particular problems. For example, in Georgia our main insect pests are the gypsy moth, other web-spinning caterpillars, weevils, and aphids. In Atlanta, diseases such as scale, canker sores and infections caused by root rot fungi are common. Here's a list of some of the more common species that cause damage to trees and shrubs:

Gypsy moths: These web-spinning caterpillars are found throughout the country. Mature moths have large wingspans (up to 5 inches!) with distinct white patterns on their wings. Adults lay eggs in clusters on tree branches during the spring. The larvae hatch from the eggs and produce wooly tufts that can sometimes be seen from the ground. The larvae feed on leaves for several weeks before pupating into a cocoon. Within a year, adult moths emerge from these cocoons and begin laying eggs again. It's important to note that even if you don't have mature moths flying around your yard, you still may have an infestation of young caterpillars!
